Therapy For Anxiety & Stress

I specialize in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and high-functioning anxiety. High-functioning anxiety is a form of generalized anxiety I commonly see women struggle with in my practice. You may identify with high-functioning anxiety if any of the following apply to you:

  • Perfectionist

  • Overpacked schedule

  • Excessive anxiety and worry, overthinking

  • Chronic tiredness and/or problems with sleep

  • Feeling on edge and restless, irritable

  • High achieving

  • Driven by details and order

  • Burnout

  • Juggling many projects and tasks at once

  • Difficultly relaxing, doing nothing, or sitting still

  • Controlling habits and strict routines

  • Fear of disappointing others or letting people down

Together we can work to decrease your emotional and physical exhaustion, learn tools to better manage anxiety, decrease ruminating thoughts, and create more balance in your life.

I use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approaches to treat anxiety.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to teach people how to manage overwhelming emotions. You will learn effective coping strategies to deal with distressing situations, regulate emotions, improve interpersonal relationships and be more present in your everyday life. DBT emphasizes creating a life you want to live.

Research has shown DBT to be effective in treating a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, addiction, impulsivity, relationship problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders.

DBT includes four sets of behavioral skills

Mindfulness: The practice of being present in your life and not checked out; engaged in the moment, experiencing one’s emotions and senses fully, yet with grounded perspective.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Learning to be effective in asking for what you want and need from others. Balancing your needs with others. Skills for communicating boundaries and saying no. Maintaining self-respect and relationships with others.

Emotion Regulation: Learn to be in control of your emotions rather than let emotions control you. Skills to regulate emotions and cope effectively. Experience more of the emotions you want and less of the ones you don’t.

Distress Tolerance: Skills to tolerate painful emotions in difficult situations without making things worse. Acceptance skills for coming to terms with that which we have no control over or cannot change.

Therapy for Women

As women we are uniquely vulnerable to biological, emotional, and psychosocial stressors. Women are twice as likely as men to develop an anxiety disorder. Anxious women are also more likely to develop an eating disorder, depression, relationship difficulties or feel that they just “don’t feel happy.” Oftentimes these issues can arise are during particular life transitions such as going to college, forming relationships and dating, starting a career, creating a family, or having children grow up.

My passion lies in helping women to see their worth, excel at what they do, and build a life grounded in passion, connection, and joy.

The following is a list of issues some women face.  Men of course face some of these challenges, but as a group women encounter these problems even more.

Women’s Issues include:

  • Eating disorders

  • Body image issues

  • Procrastination

  • Juggling roles (work, family, children)

  • Caretaker Syndrome and burnout

  • Emotional distress

  • Family planning

  • Parenting

  • Balancing traditional roles with personal ambitions

  • Self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness

  • Sexuality

  • Physical Health

  • Stage of life transitions

  • Perfectionism

  • Concerns about dating and love

  • Friendships

  • Career

  • Stress
